Menzies' Schiff Reagent

Ingredient Amount
Pararosanilin 0.2 g
Distilled water 400 mL
Hydrochloric acid, 1N 4 mL
Sodium thiosulphate 96 g

Dissolve the dye in boiling distilled water, then add the sodium thiosulphate and mix well. Filter, add the hydrochloric acid, then stir until the solution is crystal clear and slightly pink with a pink or white precipitate (about 1-2 hours). Refrigerate overnight and store in a tightly stoppered bottle in the dark. Filter before use.

  1. The solution should be colourless or very pale amber. Brown solutions will often stain poorly. Usually these have been made from a batch of basic fuchsin containing too little pararosanilin.
