Menzies’ Formulation
Solution

| Pararosanilin | 0.2 | g |
| Distilled water | 400 | mL |
| Hydrochloric acid, 1N | 4 | mL |
| Sodium thiosulfate | 96 | g |
Preparation
- Dissolve the dye in boiling distilled water, then add the sodium thiosulfate and mix well.
- Filter, add the hydrochloric acid, then stir until the solution is crystal clear and slightly pink with a pink or white precipitate (about 1-2 hours).
- Refrigerate overnight and store in a tightly stoppered bottle in the dark.
- Filter before use.
Notes
- The solution should be colorless or very pale amber. Brown solutions will often stain poorly. Usually these have been made from a batch of basic fuchsin containing too little pararosanilin.
