Champy's Fluid

Chromium trioxide 1 g
Potassium dichromate 3 g
Osmium tetroxide 1 g
Distilled water 250 mL

Dissolve the chromium trioxide and the potassium dichromate in 150 mL of the distilled water. Dissolve the osmium tetroxide in the remaining 100 mL of distilled water. When both are dissolved, combine the solutions.

The solution is stable for some time. It is suitable for use when cytological preservation is the main interest. Pieces must be fairly small, preferably 1-2 mm thick and never more than 3 mm.

Pieces less than 2 millimetres should be fixed within 24 hours.

Wash in running tap water overnight to remove chromium and osmium compounds.
