This dye is a lake, in which the mordant metal is ferric iron. However, the iron appears to play no part in staining tissues. The unlaked dye is Naphthol green Y, C.I. 10005. Attachment to tissues is considered to be through the sulphonic group. The dye is therefore an acid dye, but it is rarely used for staining tissues.

The formula on the left is given by Conn, and is similar to that given by Gurr. The formula on the right is given by Aldrich.
